When a Hut is a Home: Kitchen Addition

The first round of When a Hut is a Home seemed to be interesting for people to see, so I decided to give it another go.  This time around I thought it would be fun to share pictures of some of the kitchens I've eaten my meals at along the way in Nicaragua.

My husband and I have been to Nicaragua three times so far and will be returning in January of 2009.  Our purpose for the travel has been to hook up with local missionaries and provide basic medical clinics to locals who otherwise have no access.  Even something as simple as Advil and Tylenol is a BIG deal when your entire day is spent in the pursuit of acquiring food and securing shelter.  My husband, Randy Visser, is an internal medicine doc here in Redmond, OR and in Nicaragua (actually Mexico too) I play pharmacist.  Shh, don't tell NAR!

So with that little bit of background, here we go!***************************************************************************************************

Kitchen1

****************************************************************************************************

This is a bread oven in the village of Los Cedros, just outside of Managua.  Bread is cooked here and actually sold at the local markets.  I know, a little scary.  It gets scarier.  There was a very active monkey living in this house, so I referred to it as monkey bread, which I passed on eating.  Only two of those who partook were sick the next day, so I guess the odds were better than I thought. LOL

****************************************************************************************************

Kitchen2

****************************************************************************************************

This is a restaurant (yes, you heard me right) along the Rio Coco River as we headed into the jungle.  And yes, those are chickens, a pig, and a dog hanging out in the kitchen.  Although the chickens probably won't be hanging out much longer, as they will surely find there way into a pot soon.  The person served the last bowl is also the person who receives the last of the chicken parts for his meal.  In this case it was what we believed to be the heart and what I'm sure was the "egg shoot".  On our way back through several days later, this kitchen had actually burned down and was being rebuilt at a new location.

****************************************************************************************************

Kitchen3

****************************************************************************************************

This kitchen is in the Miskito Indian home we were guests in at the village of Walakitang where we held the medical clinics.  When we returned last year it had been washed away in the side storm of a hurricane.

Kitchen4

This is a close up of the prep work taking place in that kitchen.  A machete is the tool of choice for pretty much everything.

****************************************************************************************************

Kitchen5

****************************************************************************************************

Another resturaunt on our way back out of the jungle.  Here there were "meat" choices as well as eggs and tortillas to go with the rice & beans and plantains.  Even a warm soda.  We were feeling quite spoiled!

So what do you think, ready for an adventure?!

Fight Gone Bad Fundraiser for Alexis Hlavacek - Redmond, OR

Fight Gone Bad III was held Saturday September 27th, 2008 and raised over $10,000

This CrossFit Workout, held at the new Central Oregon Cross Fit School of Fitness, proved to be both     hard and fun. Fight Gone Bad is a national fundraiser that has raised millions for different causes      through Athletes for a Cure.

This year's event raised funds for the Alexis Hlavacek Benefit, a Redmond health and fitness enthusiast who was critically injured in a life-threatening motorcycle accident over the Labor Day holiday.

For each person that participated in the event, The RAC donated $10 each in support of Alexis and her husband Dennis, regular and loyal members of the club.

Joe Lochner of State Farm Insurance also contributed $10 per person. The remander came from additional donations.

Sweatin' For Alexis!

40 people showed up to endure "Fight Gone Bad" in an effort to raise over $10,000 for a great cause!

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED!

COCF
As a participant is this event and workout I can tell you first hand, it was a challenging workout! It is amazing what a 15 minute workout can do even to an already active body.  Let's just say my regular workout at RAC on Monday was a bit more challenging than usual!  If Central Oregon Cross Fit becomes a regular part of your workout routine, I have no doubt you will quickly become the fittest of the fit.

Thank you again to Joe Lochner, Redmond Athletic Club, Central Oregon Cross Fit, owners Ryan & Jen Hudson, and all who participated in this generous fundraiser for our friend (and fellow real estate agent) Alexis.  I know it was a sacrifice, so thanks for showing what Central Oregonians are all about!!

This Week at WineStyles of Redmond - Oct. 6th-12th

Winestyle

Last week I introduced you to one of our local gathering places, WineStyles of Redmond, which just happens to be in the same complex as my office, Desert Sky Real Estate, LLC.  With free wine tasting for Wine Club members, I find myself "next door" once or twice a week.

One of the things I love is the "Cheers" feel you get when you walk through the door.  It is a rare occasion that I don't run into local friends and colleagues, or those I have met specifically through my wine tasting and live music adventures.

If you haven't visited our local WineStyles of Redmond, it's time.  As one of the original WineClub members, here from the beginning, I can tell you first hand you've been missing out!

When a Hut is a Home

I thought it would be fun to share some of the more interesting homes I've had the privilege to visit and be a house hut guest in.  You quickly gain perspective and learn how truly blessed most of us are in the homes (and with the creature comforts) we have.  Hut

*************************************************************************************************

This is the "kitchen sink" of a Miskito Indian home I have stayed in a few times in Walakitang.  Having a separate "kitchen" makes this a pretty sweet house!

Another "housing complex" in the same village along the Rio Coco River.

Yes, all of those people live in that house!!!

Hope you enjoy these shots.  If you do, maybe I'll put up a few more here and there with stories to back them up.
